Bangladesh and the United States have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on strategic cooperation in the energy sector.

The memorandum of understanding was signed at the Department of Energy (DOE) in Washington, DC on Thursday (May 14) morning.

It was signed by Energy Secretary Chris Wright on behalf of the United States and Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman on behalf of Bangladesh. In a brief speech at the signing ceremony, the Bangladesh Foreign Minister called the MoU another milestone in the growing Bangladesh-US relationship. He thanked Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and US President Donald Trump for their support for the initiative.

US Energy Secretary Wright described the MoU as a historic development in Bangladesh-US relations.

Officials from the Bangladesh Embassy and high-ranking officials from the US Department of Energy were present at the signing ceremony.

This MoU comes at a time when many countries around the world, including Bangladesh, are facing serious challenges in ensuring their energy security due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East region. This MoU is based on affordable prices and stability of supply systems.

This will contribute to Bangladesh's efforts to increase long-term energy security by diversifying energy source options and open new avenues for greater energy cooperation between Bangladesh and the United States.

It will facilitate capacity building, knowledge and expertise exchange, and research in oil, gas, geothermal, and bioenergy between the two countries, as well as help Bangladesh import US LNG, LPG, and other energy products at affordable prices.
